- **Event Description**: Discover how artists made expressions of faith visible with their depictions of music, in this in-depth but accessible talk by Amina Wright.About this EventIn every culture, music and singing have always been among the most fundamental expressions of faith and spirituality, but for artists expressing the power of music in a silent, visual medium is a paradox. And yet, visual representations of music are essential in Western Christian art. In this talk, we will look at images of some of the Biblical narratives that show the power of music in all its variety: from David’s soothing harp to the terrifying trumpets of the Apocalypse. There will be a particular focus on angels: why are they so often depicted with instruments, and what does this tell us about music and spirituality?About Amina WrightAmina has over three decades of experience as a curator of historic art collectionsand exhibitions. She has produced several major exhibitions on eighteenth-century BritishArt and Old Masters and published and lectured widely in these areas. She has held positions with the National Trust and English Heritage, and was Senior Curator at the Holburne and, most recently, at the Auckland Project’s Faith Museum in County Durham.Amina has an MA in Christianity & the Arts from King’s College London and is an accreditedlecturer of The Arts Society. The talk will serve as an introduction to the topic, and no prior knowledge is necessary to join us! Attend live at the Museum or stream online from your sofa. This event is part of the public programming for our exhibition This talk will last an hour. Tickets are available to watch either ONLINE or IN-PERSON at the Foundling Museum; in-person tickets include Museum entry. The online recording will be available to watch for 1 month.
